John Kilpatrick's Harpsichord

The harpsichord was made from a John Storrs kit, taking several years of spare time (though only 400-450 hours in total), and was completed in 1991.
Storrs Kits are no longer made. This was a "Decorated French Double". Later models have a transposing keyboard - this one doesn't. The lid papers were by Mac & Me (who no longer supply them), and the mottos were of my own choosing, rather than being copied from past instruments.

Harpsichord lid motto:

  EXIVIT SONVS EORVM
  sonus eorum

"their sound is gone out into all lands"
(one of my harpsichords found its way to Japan)

Flap motto (facing away):

HI
          TRES
         VNVM
          SVNT

hi tres unum sunt

"these three are one"
( the instrument has three choirs of strings)
Fall-board motto (this board drops down at the front and comes off):

DECVS ET TVTAMEN
decus et tutamen
"an ornament and a safeguard"
(the motto found on the edge of many early UK £1 coins)
